May 28th, 2017, Eureka and the Redwood National Park

May 28th, 2017, Eureka and the Redwood National Park
We had a good down day on Saturday.  It was laundry day in Fortuna. Also a visit to Safeway for food.  And then to Les Schwab for an oil change. Elaine also got her hair cut and got all the local info from the hair dresser.
On Sunday we drove north to Eureka and the Redwood National Park.
A interesting downtown sample of the old architecture.
This establishment is explained fully in the photo of the tablet below.

Left our campsite in Olema early on Friday and headed north along the coast taking Route 1. Along the way we saw many examples of interesting rock weathered by the ocean.  We also stopped in at Mendocino for a quick look and a mid afternoon coffee.  The town had a good feel to it.

May 25th,Thursday, 2017, Napa Valley

May 25th,Thursday,  2017, Napa Valley
We camped about an hour north of San Francisco near Point Reyes National Seashore at Olema.  We were just about 30 minutes from Napa, so we decided to visit the wine country.  We aimed for the town of Napa and the Napa Historical Museum.  The museum was not exactly what we were hoping for, as we wanted to learn about wine growing, but it did have an unexpected exhibit on eccentric sound machines by Paul Dresher.  Google him to see some unusual and interesting stuff.. The second half of the museum did have some history of the Napa Valley.  To get a really good background in vinology we were directed to UC Davis.  This for another day...
A nice scenic tree lined road in Napa.
Paul Dresher's Sound Maze exhibit at the Napa Historical Museum.
 Some info on the exhibit.
This captured my attention as both the length and thickness of each piece of wood gauged the tone generated when that piece was struck.
On the lower level of the museum in the historical section, this basket caught my attention.
And this basket was so small it needed a magnifying lens to see it in detail.
Some rolling hills of Napa with vineyards and a windmill.  An interesting contrast.
Before we left the valley we stopped in at the most  interesting and scenic winery .
Chimney Rock Winery. Founded by South Africans and designed in the Dutch Colonial style.
Some of the vineyards at the winery.
Elaine enjoying a glass of  Elevage Blanc.
Out in the back we posed in front of their cellar.
The cellar without us blocking the view.

And of course we purchased a bottle.
 Another view of their vineyards.

And a stare down with one of the locals on the way back to our campsite.

May 24th, Wednesday, 2017 San Francisco

May 24th, Wednesday,  2017 San Francisco
Tuesday night we camped just outside Yosemite Park in Yosemite National Forest at a private campground called Yosemite Ridge Resort.  It was not a resort! All the public campgrounds were booked so we settled for Yosemite Ridge.  Wednesday morning we headed for San Francisco on Route 120.  We came out of the mountains into rolling hills of grass and leafy green trees.
San Francisco. We headed into San Francisco across the Bay Bridge and then took the 101 towards the Golden Gate Bridge.  The 101 turned out to be a local street down the center of San Francisco so we got a real feel for the city.

Our son Matt texted me to visit the Yoda statue in the Presidio .  When we got there a very nice parking lot attendant suggested where to park and told us to not miss going into the lobby of Lucas Films.

May 23rd, Tuesday, Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park

May 23rd, Tuesday, Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park
Tuesday morning we visited Grant's Grove at Sequoia National Park which had a very impressive grove of giant sequoia trees.
A nice view coming into the park.
We took many photos of the giant trees but are just publishing a few of them.

Tuesday afternoon we went into Yosemite National Park and saw the highlights of Yosemite Valley.

When you drive into Yosemite, you go through this long tunnel and come out into this view.  Very impressive.

A large stone face in Yosemite Valley known as El Capitan.
Many falls in Yosemite Valley, with the most popular being this one called Bridalveil Fall.
