May 12th, Friday, Abilene KS Eisenhower Museum

May 12th, Friday, Abilene KS Eisenhower Museum
Pleasant drive a few hours from Lawrence KS to Abilene KS west on I-70. In Abilene is the Eisenhower homestead, Presidential library and museum. All in all a very nice layout and interesting exhibits in both the library and the museum.  We also got to see the home where Dwight Eisenhower was born and grew up in.
Sewing table in the Eisenhower boy's bedroom.
Twin beds and custom made bed covers in the eisenhower boy's bedroom.
Front sitting room in the homestead

Custom made day bed cover in the music parlor.
Eisenhower's father hand wired the house for electricity during the turn of the century and the same wire is still working and the house has not burned down yet!
A bread dough box in the dining room.
A nice hutch in the dining room.
Eisenhower's dad also self install indoor plumbing. A real DIY fellow.  Man after my own heart.
Phone in the dining room and hat hook.  You knew dad was home when you saw a hat on the horn.
View of teh new gas stove in the kitchen.
Side rear of the homestead house.
Front view of the homestead house.
The Eisenhowers and one of their sons is buried on the grounds in this chapel.

In between the library and the museum, an impressive picture of the General with Ike.

This caught my eye in the museum: an electric car.
When the Germans invaded Holland they went through two of the towns I visited when working for North American Philips, Eindhoven(The "Nat Labs") and Nijmegen(NA Philips semiconductor plant).
We ended the day at Wilson Lake State Park about 15 miles west of Salina KS.  We are here for two days and some serious vegging out.
On our way to Wilson Lake we saw many windmills along the interstate.  Seems like Kansas and West Texas have many windmills in operation.  It would be interesting to find out how much energy is generated by all these wind mills.
Vegging out the next day at Wilson Lake I constructed a prototype sun shade for my iphone so that I could read a book I had downloaded.  It worked well!
A nice view from out campsite of Wilson Lake at dinner time.

  1. I like your trip concept. Did not know you were taking a tour of Presidential Museums / hometowns.
