June 1st, Thursday, Columbia River Gorge and Portland OR

June 1st, Thursday, Columbia River Gorge and Portland OR
Slept well at Ainsworth State Park.  The park was cut into the side of the hill that borders the Columbia River.  We traveled east up the Columbia to the town of Hood River.  Then crossed the river into Washington and traveled back west towards Portland.  We ended the day 50 miles north of Portland at Seacrest State Park next to Silver Lake.
Campsite at Ainsworth State park.
On our way out of the park we noticed some familiar names for the camp hosts.

On the way east up the Columbia River Gorge we toured the Bonneville Dam. Here is a rotor assembly out of one of the hydro-electric generators.

During WWII the dam was protected against enemy sabotage with this guard house.
In the visitor center for the dam, I learned the origin of the Chinook Helicopter name.
Some street shoots from Hood River where we stopped for coffee and crossed the river.
We often park the rv just like a car.
The goodwill in Hood River.
A bank turned into a winery.

The bridge crossing the Columbia River at Hood River.
Some hood river artwork outside the coffee shop.
More of Hood River.
Views traveling west along the Columbia river on the Washington state side.
Hey Elaine, how high is our RV?
We stopped at the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center on our journey west along the northern bank.
A great shot of their National cash register at there welcome desk.  I have one similiar to this in my attic waiting for me to retire and restore it.
Elaine found this neat quote on a clock piece there.
View out the back of the interpretive center.  A back yard after my own heart.
I thought these woven shoes were neat.
They have this huge rosary exhibit there.

 A flag made of rosaries.

We finally got to Portland where our first stop was Powell's  City of Books.
Elaine found this interesting book there.
We had an early dinner at Deschutes
An inside view of Deschutes.
